MAJOR IMPROVEMENT PROJECT COMPLETED AT CHEVERY AIRPORT

No. Q13/03 For release November 20, 2003 MAJOR IMPROVEMENT PROJECTCOMPLETED AT CHEVERY AIRPORT CHEVERY, Quebec -- Transport Minister David Collenette today announced that a major improvement project at Chevery airport has now been completed. Earlier this year, a $4,649,239 contract had been awarded to Construction BML -- Division Sintra Inc.of St-Jean-Chrysostôme for this Chevery Airport project, involving the restoration of the aircraft manoeuvering areas and the replacement of visual aids. "The Government of Canada has implemented its commitment to support remote communities by providing them with the infrastructure that is essential for the safe and efficient transportation of people and goods," said Mr. Collenette. The restoration of the movement area included repairing the foundations, repaving the runway, taxiway and aircraft parking apron, and restoring the runway profile. Visual aids were also replaced. Work was completed in October. "This project helps the airport generate economic activity and restore an essential transportation facility that will serve this community well for many years to come," added Mr. Collenette. Chevery Airport is owned by Transport Canada and operated by the municipality of Côte-Nord-du-Golfe Saint-Laurent under the terms of an agreement with Transport Canada. It has been designated a remote airport as defined in the National Airports Policy. Chevery Airport is located in the Lower North Shore region of Quebec, about 500 kilometres east of Sept Îles. In the absence of road access to this region, the airport plays a key role in regional development and in the transportation of people and goods to and from this isolated community.
