Thibault appoints representatives of the Freshwater Fish Marketing Corporation

OTTAWA - The Honourable Robert G. Thibault, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, today announced the appointments of Ron Ballantyne and Edward Isfeld as directors of the Freshwater Fish Marketing Corporation (FFMC)."I would like to thank Mr. Ballantyne for taking on this important responsibility with the board. I would also like to thank Mr. Isfeld for agreeing to take on a new capacity with the corporation," said Minister Thibault. "Their experience and understanding of the importance of providing a high-quality, dependable supply of freshwater fish products to markets at home and around the world will be an asset to the Corporation."Currently the Manitoba provincial representative, Edward Isfeld will now replace Robert Kristjanson as a director for the corporation. Robert Kristjanson is retiring after serving for five years on the board. Minister Thibault thanked Mr. Kristjanson for his valuable contributions and advice while on the board of the FFMC.Ron Ballantyne, of Grand Rapids, Manitoba, has been a self-employed commercial freshwater fisherman for more than 25 years. He is also a councillor with the Grand Rapids First Nation.His interests lie in hunting, fishing and trapping. Mr. Ballantyne has also worked part time for 20 years in the court worker program.Edward John Isfeld, of Winnipeg Beach, Manitoba has served on the FFMC Board for 13 years. Before serving on the board he was a member of the FFMC's fishermen's committee. Mr. Isfeld acted as president of the Lake Winnipeg Fishermen's Association for 25 years and was a fishery representative on the Lake Winnipeg Advisory Board for more than 20 years.The FFMC is a Crown corporation established in 1969 under the Freshwater Fish Marketing Act to improve returns to fishers while operating on a self-sustaining basis. The corporation regulates inter-provincial and export trade of freshwater fish, fish products and by-products from the freshwater commercial fisheries in Canada's three Prairie provinces, the Northwest Territories and part of Northwestern Ontario. Each province or territory appoints one director to the11-member board of the FFMC.
