EMO, ONTARIO — The Government of Canada today saluted the energy-saving efforts of the opening of the new Cloverleaf Grocery store in Emo, Ontario. Mark, Dan, Bill and Dave Loney, co-owners of Cloverleaf Grocery, received a commemorative plaque on behalf of the Honourable Herb Dhaliwal, Minister of Natural Resources Canada. The Commercial Building Incentive Program (CBIP) plaque recognizes the incorporation of innovative energy-efficient design into new commercial buildings. “Cloverleaf Grocery is to be commended for its leadership in energy efficiency,” said Minister Dhaliwal. “Efforts like this save money, help the environment and support the Government of Canada’s climate change commitments.” Cloverleaf received a $32,958 CBIP contribution in September toward the construction of its 1,482-m2 retail food store, which features such energy-saving devices as a ventilation air-heat recovery system, water-source heat pumps, refrigerant heat recovery and a highly efficient lighting design. CBIP offers financial incentives for incorporating energy-efficiency features in new commercial, institutional and multi-unit residential building designs that are at least 25 percent more energy-efficient than a reference building that complies with the Model National Energy Code for Buildings (MNECB). The design of the Cloverleaf Grocery represented a 28.6-percent energy savings over the MNECB standard. CBIP has contributed to several hundred building projects since 1998. On August 12, 2003, the Government of Canada contributed a further $104 million to the commercial buildings sector over the next five years. The funding will be focussed on energy efficiency in new and existing buildings. The Government of Canada has committed more than $3.7 billion to climate change programs and to the development of leading-edge technologies over the past five years, including $2 billion in Budget 2003 alone. The CBIP initiative advances the Government of Canada’s commitment to the sustainable development of our natural resources — contributing to their economic importance and to a strong society and communities through knowledge, innovation, technology and international leadership. By integrating our economic, social and environmental goals, we can ensure our quality of life and build the Canada we want, for ourselves and for future generations.
