THIBAULT ANNOUNCES 2004 CONTRACTS FOR ATLANTIC AT-SEA OBSERVER PROGRAM

(4 December, 2003) OTTAWA -- The Honourable Robert G. Thibault, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, today awarded three contracts for the provision of at-sea fisheries observer coverage services in 2004 on Canada's East Coast. The contracts were awarded to Seawatch Inc., of St. John's, NL, for DFO's Newfoundland and Labrador Region; Biorex of Quebec City, for DFO's Gulf and Quebec Regions; and GTA/Javitech, of Dartmouth, N.S., for DFO's Maritimes Region. The at-sea fisheries observer program provides an independent presence onboard fishing vessels. The approximately 250 observers in Atlantic Canada and Quebec monitor compliance with regulations and provide information for day-to-day fisheries management. The program also provides technical and biological data for fisheries managers and scientists.- 30 -
