OTTAWA, ONTARIO - Federal Minister of Labour, the Honourable Claudette Bradshaw, today announced the appointment of two mediators in the dispute between Telus Communications Inc, Burnaby, British Columbia, and Edmonton, Alberta, and the Telecommunications Workers Union.
"This is a critical opportunity for the parties to resolve the issues in dispute with the assistance of experienced mediators," said Minister Bradshaw. "I am confident that with a willingness to be flexible and much hard work, the parties will be able to reach a settlement without a work stoppage."
Mediation meetings are scheduled to begin Monday, January 19, 2004, in Vancouver. The two mediators, Mr. William Lewis, Regional Director of the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service Mountain Region, and Mr. Thomas Hodges, Regional Director of the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service Northwestern Region, have been appointed by the Minister under Section 105 of the Canada Labour Code. Mr. Lewis and Mr. Hodges acted as conciliation officers in the dispute and are thoroughly familiar with the parties and the issues.
The collective agreement between the parties, covering more than 10,000 communications employees, expired December 31, 2000.
