Natural Resources Canada2004/12March 30, 2004NEW ACCORD TO STRENGTHEN MANAGEMENT OF CANADA'S FORESTS OTTAWA - Canada has taken another step forward in sustainable forest management with the signing of the third Canada Forest Accord. The Accord, recently signed by the Honourable R. John Efford, Minister of Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), is a formal commitment supported by Canadian forest ministers, heads of industry and other non-governmental organizations to work together toward the long-term health of Canada's forests. The Accord complements the National Forest Strategy 2003-2008 (NFS), which aims to improve forest practices and policies over the next five years and strengthen the competitiveness of Canada's forest sector. "Natural Resources Canada is proud to play a central and active role in the National Forest Strategy 2003-2008," said Minister Efford. "This Accord showcases the commitment of many stakeholders across Canada to collaborate in the sustainable management of our forests." By signing the Accord, NRCan will become an active member of the National Forest Strategy Coalition. Working with the provinces and territories and more than 50 national and regional organizations, this coalition will oversee the implementation of the NFS across Canada. The Coalition ensures that all Canadians have an important role in shaping the decisions affecting forest conservation and use. The Canada Forest Accord includes several commitments: managing Canada's forests through an ecosystem-based approach; adopting policies and practices that support forest-based community sustainability; accommodating Aboriginal and treaty rights in the sustainable use of the forest; understanding, developing and increasing the value of forest products and services; and actively engaging Canadians. The fifth National Forest Strategy, entitled A Sustainable Forest: The Canadian Commitment, was developed through extensive cross-country consultations and public dialogue within the broad forestry community. The NFS also demonstrates Canada's commitment to the importance of its forest to the global community. Its implementation fulfils international commitments, including biodiversity conservation and addressing climate change. The Canada Forest Accord and the National Forest Strategy complement NRCan's commitment to the sustainable development of natural resources and contribute to the Government of Canada's agenda of strong social foundations, a strong economy for the 21st century and ensuring Canada's role of pride and influence in the world.
