SYDNEY, April 5, 2004 -- Rodger Cuzner, Member of Parliament (Bras d'Or Cape Breton), on behalf of the Honourable Hélène Chalifour Scherrer, Minister of Canadian Heritage, today announced Government of Canada support for Cape Bretoner Publications so it can continue to produce The Cape Bretoner magazine. This publication informs local residents of issues that concern them."I would like to congratulate Cape Bretoner Publications for its initiative in producing a magazine that, since 1992, has given readers an in-depth look at current events in the region," said Mr. Cuzner. "The Cape Bretoner offers a uniquely Cape Breton viewpoint, and I am proud that the Government of Canada is a partner in its success." "With this contribution, the Government of Canada demonstrates its commitment to ensure Canadians have access to a wide range of high-quality Canadian magazines," said Minister Chalifour Scherrer. "By supporting local magazines like The Cape Bretoner, we also help give a voice to the unique Canadian communities found across the country."Funding of $78,800 will help the publisher raise the profile of the magazine through various promotional and marketing activities, in order to increase readership and attract more advertisers key elements in ensuring the magazine's long-term viability.Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through the Support for Business Development for Small Magazine Publishers component of the Canada Magazine Fund. This Fund contributes toward the production of high-quality magazines showcasing the work of a wide cross-section of Canadian creators. The Fund also helps build the magazine industry's capacity through support for business development of small magazine publishers, industry development projects, and support for arts and literary magazines.Funding for this initiative was provided for in the March 2004 federal Budget.
