Government of Canada Seeks to Boost Participation in Sport

OTTAWA, April 7, 2004 -- Minister of State (Sport), the Honourable Stan Keyes today announced funding to ParticipAction to develop a strategy that builds on current efforts to increase participation in organized sport."The ParticipAction' name is one that has an important symbolic meaning for Canadians," said Minister Keyes. "ParticipAction has tremendous potential to tie together all the work that has been done in the area of sport participation, and get Canadians moving."The Government of Canada will provide funding of up to $250,000 to ParticipAction to conduct a feasibility study on how to increase participation in organized sport by Canadians. ParticipAction will be encouraged to consult with potential partners, including Health Canada, the Department of Canadian Heritage, provincial and territorial governments, and other stakeholders to develop a national strategy. "Organized sport is a fun and social part of keeping active, staying fit and living a long, healthy life," added Minister Keyes. "We need to communicate that to more Canadians."The Government of Canada, the provincial and territorial governments and the sport community have worked together to build the landmark Canadian Sport Policy which was endorsed in April 2002. It sets specific goals to increase participation and excellence within the Canadian sport system.Overall, the Government of Canada provides $100 million in annual funding to support participation and excellence in sport from the playground to the podium.
