Governor General to attend rechristening of the brigantine Black Jack

April 29, 2004 OTTAWA - Her Excellency the Right Honourable Adrienne Clarkson, Governor General of Canada, will celebrate 100 years of Ottawa River history by taking part in the rechristening of the brigantine Black Jack on Sunday, May 2, 2004. The rechristening ceremony will take place at 2 p.m. at the Britannia Yacht Club in Ottawa. Governor General Clarkson will deliver brief remarks as well as rechristen and launch the 100-year-old tall ship into her second century. The 87-foot Black Jack was once a steam tug whose home port was Quyon, off the Ottawa River. Prefabricated in Scotland and assembled in Quyon, the ship shared the Ottawa River with big passenger and cargo paddle-wheelers and other work boats. The brigantine Black Jack now provides sail training to hundreds of young people, allowing them the opportunity to develop skills in leadership and self-reliance. The event is organized by the Bytown Brigantine Foundation, a non-profit charitable foundation dedicated to providing tall ship experiences to people of all ages.
