Governor General to open the exhibition Volunteerism from Asia to Canada

April 28, 2004 OTTAWA – Her Excellency the Right Honourable Adrienne Clarkson, Governor General of Canada, will officially open the exhibition entitled Volunteerism from Asia to Canada that commemorates the 150th anniversary of the foundation of the Royal Hong Kong Regiment on Saturday, May 1, 2004, at 1:00 p.m., at the First Markham Place shopping centre. The exhibition will feature pictures and artefacts outlining the history of the Regiment. The Royal Hong Kong Regiment was formed in May 1854 when the Crimean War led to a reduction of the British military presence in Hong Kong. Local volunteers were called upon to help bolster the defences at a time when marauding pirates were still a hazard on the coast of China. A total of 99 Europeans were recruited—mostly British, but with some Portuguese, Scandinavians and Germans. The opening of the exhibition coincides with the beginning of Asian Heritage Month in Canada.
