April8, 2004 OTTAWA– Her Excellency the Right Honourable Adrienne Clarkson, Governor General of Canada, will present the 2003 Michener Award for meritorious public service in journalism and the 2004 Michener-Deacon Fellowship on Thursday, April 15 at 5:30 p.m., at Rideau Hall.The six finalists for the 2003 Michener Award are CBC News (Saskatoon), the Winnipeg Free Press, the Toronto Star, the Globe and Mail, the National Post and La Presse. Finalists were selected from 57 entries.The Governor General will also present a certificate to Cecil Rosner—bureau chief for CBC English Television News in Manitoba—who has been chosen to receive the 2004 Michener-Deacon Fellowship. Established in 1987, the Fellowship helps to advance education in the field of journalism and to foster promotion of public interest through values that benefit the community.Launched in 1970 under the auspices of Canada's third Canadian Governor General, the late Roland Michener, the award focuses on the degree of public benefit generated by media projects––print, broadcast, large and small. The annual award is open to daily and weekly newspapers, news agencies, radio and television stations and networks, as well as periodicals.
