SIMON FRASER UNIVERSITY DEVELOPS A BIBLIOGRAPHY DATA BASE MANAGEMENT TOOL FOR CANADIAN PUBLISHERS

Vancouver, April 21, 2004 -- The Honourable Hedy Fry, Member of Parliament (Vancouver-Centre), today announced on behalf of the Honourable Hélène Chalifour Scherrer, Minister of Canadian Heritage, a multi-year financial support to the Canadian Centre for Studies in Publishing of the Simon Fraser University in British Colombia. This help will allow the Centre to begin the third phase of its ONIX Automation Project which aims at developing a management tool for a bibliography data base."The Government of Canada is happy to support the Canadian Centre for Studies in Publishing in developing this new tool of utmost importance for Canadian publishers," said Dr. Fry. "I wish to congratulate Simon Fraser University and its research unit for the quality and relevance of their work that will help the Canadian Publishing Industry to comply with international standards.""It is essential that our cultural industries embrace a new technology to remain competitive in the 21st century," explained Minister Chalifour Scherrer. "The efforts put forth by the Canadian Centre for Studies in Publishing to develop these new leading-edge tools will help Canadian publishers to adopt data base management standards recognized worldwide." The Canadian Centre for Studies in Publishing is a department of Simon Fraser University which offers a Masters program in Publishing as well as numerous workshops to professionals of the publishing industry. The Centre is largely recognized for its research on new trends in the publication, distribution and retail marketing of books.
