STATEMENT BY THE HONOURABLE AILEEN CARROLL, MINISTER FOR INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION, ON THE ABDUCTION OF AID WORKERS IN IRAQ

News Release

(2004-15) News ReleaseApril 9, 2004Ottawa -- It is with sadness and indignation that I learned of the abduction of twelve aid workers in Iraq on Thursday. Canadian Fadi Ihsan Fadel is one of these aid workers. My thoughts are with his family, and I extend to them my wishes for strength and resolve during this difficult time. Aid workers such as Mr. Fadel routinely work in dangerous conditions to deliver assistance to the most vulnerable. For this humanitarian work to be possible, their neutrality and security must be strictly respected. I urge those responsible for the abductions to free their hostages. I strongly condemn these cowardly acts and I know I am joined by Canadians and people world wide in so doing.Information: Andrew GrahamDirector of CommunicationsOffice of the Minister for International CooperationTelephone: (819) 953-3160Media Relations OfficeCanadian International Development Agency (CIDA)Telephone: (819) 953-6534E-mail: info@acdi-cida.gc.ca
