ATLANTIC PILOTAGE AUTHORITY APPOINTMENT

No. H026/04 For release May 4, 2004 OTTAWA - Transport Minister Tony Valeri today announced the appointment of Mr. Terence Pittman of Sydney, Nova Scotia, as a member of the Atlantic Pilotage Authority. "Mr. Pittman's extensive experience as a marine pilot will serve him well as he takes up his duties with the pilotage authority," said Mr. Valeri. "I am pleased that he has agreed to take on this responsibility." Mr. Pittman is currently a part-time marine pilot for the Atlantic Pilotage Authority (Cape Breton District). He has close to 50 years of experience in the marine sector, starting in 1957 as a deck apprentice, then earning his Foreign Certificate of Competency, as well as a Master Mariner designation in 1967. He began his career at sea working with Chandris (London) Ltd, and sailed with the company's various tankers and cargo ships, eventually earning the position of Operations Manager in the London office. He has worked as Master on tankers in Atlantic Canada and has served as a qualified marine pilot with the Atlantic Pilotage Authority since 1974. Mr. Pittman served as a member of the Sydney Harbour Board and the Cape Breton Tourism Board and is currently the vice-chair of the Sydney Port Corporation. The Atlantic Pilotage Authority is a Crown corporation created in 1972 under the Pilotage Act. It operates and maintains a safe, efficient and economical pilotage service on all coastal waters in the Atlantic region.
