Canada supports education in Guyana and Burkina Faso

News Release

(2004- 25) News Release May 20, 2004 Montreal -- Minister of Health, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs and Minister responsible for Official Languages Pierre Pettigrew today announced, on behalf of International Cooperation Minister Aileen Carroll, that Canada will contribute over $5 million to support basic education and teacher training initiatives in Guyana and Burkina Faso. The funds will be provided by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA). "This is an excellent opportunity for Canadians to share their expertise in the field of education and help individuals reach their full potential as productive members of society," Minister Pettigrew said. Both initiatives will be carried out by Tecsult Limited of Montreal, which was awarded the contracts through a competitive process. Tecsult will receive $3.2 million over three years to help strengthen the capacity of Burkina Faso's Ministry of Basic Education and Literacy to carry out its 10-year development plan for basic education. The country's basic education plan focuses on three areas: increasing access to formal and informal education for girls and boys from a broader geographic and social spectrum; improving the overall quality and efficiency of the education system; and helping to facilitate capacity building in managing the education system. Tecsult will also receive $2.1 million over two years to continue its existing partnership with the teachers college in Georgetown, Guyana. This includes developing pedagogical materials and administrative systems to carry out distance education programs at various levels across Guyana. In particular, this initiative will respond to the needs of Amerindian women teacher trainees living in remote regions of the country. "Providing women and children in these countries with the tools to improve their own lives will help ensure that they are able to build a better and sustainable future for themselves and their families," Minister Carroll said. "Canada's support is making a difference in the lives of people in Burkina Faso and Guyana." Funding for these initiatives was provided for in the March 2004 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework. - 30 - Information: Andrew Graham Director of Communications Office of the Minister for International Cooperation Telephone: (819) 997-2599 Media Relations Office Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) Telephone: (819) 953-6534 E-mail: info@acdi-cida.gc.ca
