GOVERNMENT OF CANADA AND HEWLETT PACKARD REACH SETTLEMENT

For immediate release OTTAWA, May 14, 2004 -- The Government of Canada today announced it has resolved a dispute with HP Canada, stemming from a complex scheme designed to exploit both parties through contracts inherited with HP's merger with Compaq Computer Corp. HP Canada has agreed to reimburse the Government of Canada the sum of CDN $ 146,000,000 - an amount determined by both parties to be appropriate upon investigation - and has thereby fully and completely honoured its contractual obligations. As a result, the Government of Canada will fully cooperate with HP Canada to take appropriate steps, including action in the courts to recover these funds from the individuals and companies involved in the scheme.
