CORNWALL ISLAND, May 21, 2004 -- Bob Kilger, Member of Parliament (Stormont-Dundas-Charlottenburgh), on behalf of the Honourable Hélène Chalifour Scherrer, Minister of Canadian Heritage, today announced the Government of Canada's support for the Strawberry Festival and the Friendship Festival presented by the Onake Corporation."The Government of Canada knows how important the arts and culture are to Canadians. That is why we are committed to encouraging the cultural vitality of our communities," said M. Kilger. "We mustn't forget that the arts and culture, in addition to being a source of pride for our communities, promoting their economic growth." "The Government of Canada is committed to supporting cultural performances outside large urban areas," said Minister Chalifour Scherrer. "Vibrant arts and cultural sectors help foster self-expression and innovation in our communities. That's why promoting the cultural vitality of the different regions of Canada is one of our most important commitments."The Strawberry Festival will take place on June 26 and 27, 2004 and the Friendship Festival will be held August 21 and 22, 2004. The festivals will include Haudenosaunee water drum songs, a variety of First Nations pow wow dances, storytelling, and a photography exhibit.Funding of $12,000 will allow the festivals to help preserve the Haudenosaunee culture, history, and traditions, and to raise awareness among the general public of the Haudenosaunee and First Nations cultures. Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through its Arts Presentation Canada program. The goal of this program is to give Canadians the opportunity to appreciate the richness and diversity of Canada's culture through professional calibre festivals and performances, and other artistic experiences.
