May 3, 2004 OTTAWA — Her Excellency the Right Honourable Adrienne Clarkson, Governor General of Canada, will officially open Phase 2 of CHEO's expanded Research Institute and the new Apoptosis Research Centre, on Wednesday, May 5, 2004, at 11:00 a.m. The new facility at CHEO houses the Apoptosis Research Centre, a molecular genetics laboratory for apoptosis research, one of the only centres of its kind in the world and the first in Canada. Apoptosis, or programmed cell death, underlies many disorders which afflict children and adults. The Governor General will witness first-hand some of the work being done in that lab, and unveil a dedication plaque. The Research Institute brings together the work and expertise of over 200 health professionals to conduct research on a wide range of pediatric health problems.
