NEW APPOINTEMENT TO THE PUBLIC SERVICE STAFF RELATIONS BOARD

OTTAWA, 14 May, 2004 -- The Honourable Hélène Chalifour Scherrer, Minister of Canadian Heritage, today announced the appointment of Ms. Joan M. Gordon as a part-time member of the Public Service Staff Relations Board.A lawyer by profession and a member of the Arbitrator's Association of British Columbia, Ms. Gordon has held numerous positions in mediation and arbitration since 1992, including Vice-Chair of the Labour Relations Board of British Columbia, from 1992 to 1996, and Chair of the Emergency Medical Assistants Licensing Board, from 1998 to 2001. In addition she has chaired numerous arbitration panels in both the public and private sectors, has lectured at seminars, and acted as legal counsel for trade unions, employers, professional organisations and individuals on various arbitration, labour relations, and human rights issues.The Public Service Staff Relations Board is an independent, quasi-judicial statutory tribunal responsible for administering the collective bargaining and grievance adjudication systems in the federal Public Service. The Board also provides mediation and conciliation services to help parties resolve differences without resorting to a formal hearing.
