NEW HOUSING INITIATIVE WITH LIARD FIRST NATION

2-02492 WHITEHORSE (May 7, 2004) - The Honourable Larry Bagnell, Yukon MP and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development, on behalf of the Honourable Andy Mitchell, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development, today announced a new housing agreement between the Liard First Nation and the Government of Canada. "I recently toured some creative work done in housing by the Liard First Nation and I am especially excited about being able to support their work further," said Mr. Bagnell. "This agreement demonstrates the cooperation between the Government of Canada and the Liard First Nation," "The Government of Canada is committed to supporting First Nations people in building capacity in their communities to improve their quality of life," said Minister Mitchell. "Through improved housing and new opportunities, the Liard First Nation can better meet the needs of their community members." "This will be an excellent opportunity for job creation in Watson Lake," said the Chief of Liard First Nation, Liard McMillan. "The flexibility of this agreement will help us better respond to housing needs in our community." Housing is one of the key priorities identified by Liard First Nation in their Management Development Plan. With the funding, the Liard First Nation plans to conduct minor and major renovations to existing houses to extend the life of these structures and to modernize the First Nation's housing policy. Work is now underway. The Liard First Nation will also undertake construction of new houses to address overcrowding. The Liard First Nation will receive $619,382 under the Department's current housing program, to be used for critical housing projects in Watson Lake, Albert Creek and Upper Liard.
