SPECIES AT RISK ACT PROHIBITIONS COME INTO FORCE

OTTAWA, June 1st, 2004 -- Environment Canada announced that the final provisions of the Species at Risk Act (SARA) come into effect as of today. The majority of the provisions of the Act came into force in June 2003. The final provisions forbid the killing, harming, harassing, capturing, taking, possessing, collecting and selling of species listed as extirpated, endangered or threatened under the Act, including their parts and derivatives. SARA also makes it illegal to destroy or damage the residence or critical habitat of these species. The Act provides for exemptions from these prohibitions only under very strict conditions. The purposes of SARA are to prevent wildlife species from becoming extinct in Canada, to provide for the recovery of wildlife species that are extirpated, endangered or threatened as a result of human activity, and to manage species of special concern to prevent them from becoming endangered or threatened.
