GOVERNMENT OF CANADA HAS SUPPORTED THE COMPLETION OF EXPORAIL WITH CONTRIBUTIONS TOTALLING $4.2 MILLION

Saint-Constant, Quebec, August 27, 2004 -- The Honourable Jacques Saada, Minister of Canada Economic Development and Minister responsible for the Francophonie, applauded the official opening of Exporail, the new Canadian Railway Museum facilities in Saint-Constant on Montreal's South Shore. Completion of this project was made possible by, among other things, non-repayable contributions totalling $4.2 million from Canada Economic Development. 'The history of the railway is inextricably linked to the history of Quebec and Canada,' said Mr. Saada. 'Upgrading the Canadian Railway Museum's facilities and equipment, while facilitating the exhibition of an outstanding collection to the general public, moves the Museum into the ranks of the world's top five railway museums. The Museum is now a major tourist attraction for the Montérégie and the Greater Montreal area.' Canada Economic Development's contributions are in line with its policy to make tourism one of the most important themes of economic development in the Greater Montreal area. Revitalization of the Museum is expected to generate tourism spinoffs of more than $15 million annually, thanks notably to the fact that it will be open to the public year round. At present, the Museum is only open from May to October.Canada Economic Development's mandate is to promote the economic development of the regions of Quebec. Primarily through financial assistance programs, the Agency elicits and supports the implementation of economic development projects. The two priorities the Agency has set itself are to foster innovation and the knowledge economy in each region of Quebec, and to help communities that are having difficulty adjusting to the new economy. In this way, the Agency contributes to the attainment of the Government of Canada's objective of building the 21st Century economy.
