FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
DARTMOUTH, NOVA SCOTIA - The Honourable Joe Volpe, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development and Mike Savage, Member of Parliament for Dartmouth- Cole Harbour, today announced funding of $760,460 for four employment projects in Nova Scotia.
"The Government of Canada is proud to support projects that will help unemployed Canadians to develop the skills, knowledge and work experience they need to ensure their full participation in society and the workplace," said Minister Volpe. "Today's announcement will help individuals in the Halifax Regional Municipality who face significant barriers to employment to be better prepared to identify and pursue employment opportunities in Canada's thriving labour market."
These projects are being funded through Human Resources and Skills Development Canada's Employment Assistance Services and Labour Market Partnerships.
Employment Assistance Services helps unemployed individuals to prepare for, find and keep employment by providing them with services such as counselling, job search techniques, job placements, and labour market information. Labour Market Partnerships helps organizations to identify their human resource requirements and develop plans to address them, and can also be used to implement labour force adjustment measures.
Funding for these projects was provided for in the March 2004 federal Budget.
These projects have been reviewed to ensure compliance with the Department's administration of its grant and contribution programs, and are subject to review under the Financial Administration Act.

Employment Assistance Services - EI Part II: Affirmative Industry Association of Nova Scotia
The Affirmative Industry Association of Nova Scotia will provide employment assistance services to a minimum of 24 persons with disabilities and significant barriers to employment in the Halifax Regional Municipality. It also aims to enhance the overall economic independence of persons with disabilities in Nova Scotia. The project will help the participants to prepare for, find and keep work by providing employment orientation workshops and job coaching sessions.

Employment Assistance Services - EI Part II: Watershed Association Development Enterprises Limited
The Watershed Association Development Enterprises Limited will provide employment assistance services to unemployed African Nova Scotia residents within the communities of Preston and Downtown Dartmouth to help clients to prepare for, find and keep work. This project will provide needs assessment, employment counselling, return-to-work action plans, case management, employment workshops and employment placement support.

Employment Assistance Services - EI Part II: Lake City Employment Services Association
The Lake City Employment Services Association will provide employment assistance services to a minimum of 180 unemployed persons with disabilities, specifically mental health consumers in the Halifax Regional Municipality to help them prepare for, find and keep work. This project will provide needs assessment, return-to-work action plans, case management, work placement support and employment opportunities.

Labour Market Partnerships - EI Part II: United Way Halifax Region
The United Way Halifax Region will work to identify how not-for-profit organizations in the Halifax Regional Municipality can continue to be employers of choice and attract and retain skilled employees. This project will establish a chamber where not-for-profit organizations can share information on human resources issues such as best practices, service delivery developments and proactive human resources planning.
