TRURO, NOVA SCOTIA - The Honourable Joe Volpe, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development, today announced funding of $630,850 for four literacy and education projects in Nova Scotia.
"Improved literacy and education are key to personal development and economic opportunity," said Minister Volpe. "The Government of Canada is committed to providing Canadians with every opportunity to upgrade their skills, realize their potential and participate fully in the workplace and society."
These projects are being funded through Human Resources and Skills Development Canada's National Literacy Secretariat (NLS) and the International Academic Mobility (IAM) initiative.
The NLS serves as the Government of Canada's focal point for sharing information and expertise on literacy issues, and acts as a catalyst for literacy action on behalf of Canadians. The Secretariat works with many partners to find innovative ways to improve the literacy skills of Canadians, to increase public awareness, and to advance literacy research. The IAM initiative provides opportunities for the reciprocal exchange of people, knowledge and expertise aimed at increasing the pool of highly skilled individuals in the global work force.
These projects have been reviewed to ensure compliance with the Department's administration of its grant and contribution programs, and are subject to review under the Financial Administration Act.

Literacy Grant - Learning Materials: Training for Success: Professional Development
The main objective of the Training for Success: Professional Development project is to ensure quality literacy programming for adult learners. This project by the Literacy Association of Nova Scotia will ensure that the needs of all learners are being effectively met in their communities by creating stronger organizational structures and providing professional development opportunities for literacy practitioners.

Literacy Grant - Prov./Terr. Coordination Info Sharing: Family Literacy (Stage Three), Laying the Foundation for Success
The Family Literacy (Stage Three), Laying the Foundation for Success project addresses the issue of family literacy in Nova Scotia. In this third stage of the project, the Colchester-East Hants Regional Library in partnership with the Nova Scotia Department of Education, Adult Education Division, will develop a family literacy network and database of family literacy programs, trainers and funding sources by region.

North American Mobility in Higher Education program: Rural Sustainability in Agriculture & Aquaculture
Nova Scotia Agricultural College will create a partnership of six institutions across Canada, the United States and Mexico to allow for student and faculty exchanges within the Rural Sustainability in Agriculture & Aquaculture project. This project will also offer work placements and internships to a minimum of 15 students while abroad.

North American Mobility in Higher Education program: Building Leadership in Public Mental Health in North America
Dalhousie University will establish a partnership of six institutions across Canada, the United States and Mexico, for the Building Leadership in Public Mental Health in North America project, enabling participating students in the field of psychiatry to increase their knowledge of North American public mental health care systems and prepare them for leadership roles in psychiatry. A minimum of 14 Canadian psychiatry exchange students will participate in exchanges with partner institutions.
