Government of Canada Supports La Bande à Bonn'eau's Efforts to Preserve Lanoraie Peatbogs

LANORAIE, September 29, 2004 -- President of the Privy Council, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, and Member of Parliament (Westmount--Ville-Marie), Lucienne Robillard, on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage Liza Frulla, today announced $40,600 in funding for La Bande à Bonn'eau in Lanoraie. This funding will allow the organization to develop a strategic plan to ensure its financial sustainability and to continue to preserve and promote peatbogs in the Lanoraie Delta."La Bande à Bonn'eau allows young people and others to discover our natural heritage and reminds them how important it is to protect our wetlands," said Minister Robillard. "I am happy to announce the Government of Canada's support for this organization that raises public awareness of the fragile state of our environment.""The peatbogs in the Lanoraie Delta attract many tourists in this region," said Minister Frulla. "I am pleased that we support the efforts of this innovative organization, which highlights an exceptional natural environment through museum-related activities."Founded in 1989, La Bande à Bonn'eau was formed by local citizens to help preserve the Lanoraie peatbogs whose existence was being threatened. The organization succeeded in having the Lanoraie Delta's peat ecosystem designated as an ecological reserve.Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through its Canadian Arts and Heritage Sustainability Program. This program seeks to encourage a modern approach to management and heightened financial stability of arts and heritage-based organizations.
