News Release

For immediate release TORONTO, Ont. September 21, 2004 - The Honourable Scott Brison, Minister of Public Works and Government Services Canada today addressed the Canadian Club of Toronto, laying out a new strategic vision aimed at transforming how the department does business. The Minister outlined his vision to strengthen the delivery of government services and streamline his department while showing a day-to-day respect for Canadian taxpayers. "The core of the strategy is about doing business better," said Minister Brison. "My goal is to find cost efficiencies without reducing services to Canadians. In fact, we intend to deliver these services smarter and faster." Minister Brison is proposing a three-point strategy to make PWGSC the centre of excellence in the provision of cost-effective services. He announced: Buying smarter: Improving the procurement process for the goods and services purchased by the government. Exploring savings in real estate: Examining the economics and risks of owning versus leasing our own office buildings. Modernizing information technology systems: Placing more government services on-line through the government's "Secure Channel," one of the most sophisticated secure networks in the world. "We will seek the advice of all our stakeholders as we move forward," said Minister Brison. "We will be consulting, listening and working hard to show respect for hard-earned taxpayers dollars."
