OTTAWA - China's rapidly growing economy and booming middle class are an ideal fit for Canadian expertise in natural resources. This is the message that the Honourable R. John Efford, Minister of Natural Resources Canada, and the Honourable Larry Bagnell, Member of Parliament for Yukon and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Natural Resources Canada, are promoting during their visit to China from September 17 to 24. "Canada is well positioned to be a world leader in developing and applying the path-breaking technologies of the 21st century," said Minister Efford. "More and more countries are turning to Canada for its expertise in energy, forestry, earth sciences, minerals and metals. This is an opportunity to demonstrate the depth and breadth of Canadian expertise in natural resources - our technology, our research and development, our innovative practices and our focus on sustainable development." During the trip, Minister Efford will visit the Qinshan nuclear power plant, the largest cooperative venture ever undertaken by Canada and China. The project, a partnership between Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd. (AECL) and the China National Nuclear Corporation, is a showcase for Canadian technology and cooperation. Brought on-line in 2003, the Qinshan project's two CANDU 6 reactors help China avoid several million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions every year. The project, which was completed under budget and ahead of schedule, was marked by a high degree of cooperation between the two countries and among the participants. Provision of advanced Canadian nuclear technology can further meet China's growing electricity needs. The trip's itinerary includes stops in Beijing, Hangzhou and Qinshan, where Minister Efford will meet with officials of the Chinese government and state-owned corporations, as well as Canadian officials and business people. The meetings will cover topics such as oil and gas, nuclear energy, housing, forestry, mining, geoscience, science and technology. With this visit, the Government of Canada is following through on its commitment to open up opportunities for Canadian exporters and investors in emerging markets like China, India and Brazil. By enhancing Canada's international leadership role in the natural resources sector and allied industries, the visit also supports the Government of Canada's agenda of strong social foundations and a strong economy for the 21st century, and helps ensure Canada's place in the world.
