September 23, 2004 OTTAWA––On behalf of Her Excellency, the Right Honourable Adrienne Clarkson, Barbara Uteck, Secretary to the Governor General and Secretary to the Advisory Council of the Order of Canada issued the following statement: "In her editorial board meeting with the Vancouver Sun on Wednesday, September 22, Her Excellency was asked about the status of Mr. David Ahenakew's membership in the Order of Canada. Her Excellency indicated her distress over the statements made by Mr. Ahenakew in December 2002, but also noted that in the matter of his membership in the Order, she takes her advice from the Order of Canada Advisory Council chaired by the Chief Justice of Canada. It is important to note that as Mr. Ahenakew is facing criminal proceedings in Saskatchewan, the Chief Justice absented herself from all Council discussions and decisions on this matter. The Clerk of the Privy Council chaired all discussions and deliberations on this matter before the Advisory Council." Mme. Uteck issued a statement on behalf of the Advisory Council on May 9 of this year in which she indicated that the Council would defer discussion on this matter until the legal proceedings under consideration by the Attorney General of Saskatchewan were completed. This matter remains before the courts.
