Travel updates for September 20, 2004 as issued by the Consular Affairs Section of Foreign Affairs Canada. Current Issues: An entry concerning Nepal (security) was amended. Canadian tourists should not travel to Nepal. Canadians travelling on business should evaluate carefully the implications for their security and safety before deciding to travel to Nepal. Canadians in Nepal should maintain a high level of personal security awareness at all times, avoid large gatherings and demonstrations, carefully monitor events both in Nepal and throughout the region, and also register and maintain contact with the Canadian Cooperation Office in Kathmandu or Foreign Affairs Canada (call collect 613-996-8885). The Maoists have scheduled a two-day zonal bandh (strike) for September 28 and 29, 2004. The affected areas include the Mechi, Koshi, Janakapur, Sagarmatha, Bagmati (including Kathmandu) and Narayani zones. Public transportation may be disrupted, including to and from Kathmandu airport. Travellers should avoid road travel outside the Kathmandu Valley and on public buses during or immediately preceding bandhs. Bandhs are usually peaceful but can erupt into riots and violence.
