CANADA SUPPORTS DEMOCRATIC PROCESS IN UKRAINE

(2004-48) News Release October 22, 2004 Ottawa -- The Honourable Aileen Carroll, Minister of International Cooperation, today announced that Canada is sending more than 50 election observers to support the conduct of free and fair elections in the Presidential vote in Ukraine, thereby contributing to the international Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) election observer mission. "Canada is interested in seeing that the upcoming Ukrainian presidential elections are conducted in a free, fair, and transparent manner, reflecting the democratic will of Ukrainians," said Minister Carroll. "Due to the special relationship between Canada and Ukraine, Canada has responded by sending one of its largest delegations ever to this election observer mission." This $771,000 initiative, funded by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), further supports CIDA's objective of promoting democratic development in Ukraine through the strengthening of governance institutions and civil society. The presidential election will take place on October 31, with an anticipated run-off on November 21. The 15 long-term and 34 short-term Canadian observers will provide a broad range of overseas and domestic elections experience. They will join an international group of 46 long-term observers and up to 1200 short-term observers coordinated by the OSCE.
