Canadian Organizations Partner with CIDA to Make a Difference in the World

(2004-47) News Release October 18, 2004 Ottawa -- The Honourable Aileen Carroll, Minister of International Cooperation, today announced that the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) will provide $14.8 million to support international development work by 84 Canadian non-governmental organizations (NGOs). "Canadian NGOs have a strong tradition of contributing to international development in partnership with CIDA," Minister Carroll said. "Today's announcement is another example of how we are working with our partners across the country to help achieve the Millennium Development Goals - a set of international goals to guide governments and citizens around the globe to end the cycle of poverty and inequality." These 84 initiatives were selected from 144 proposals received in response to a call for submission under three competitions under CIDA's Projects and Innovation Unit for the voluntary sector. The selection committees were comprised of non-government advisors and the projects recommended by them will support Canadian NGOs' work to reduce poverty, promote sustainable development, encourage gender equality, improve agriculture and the environment. The Canadian NGOs undertaking these international development projects are based in Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec, Ontario, Alberta, and British Columbia.
