Government of Canada Supports The Legacy of Hope Foundation

OTTAWA, October 15, 2004 -- Deputy Leader of the Government in the House of Commons and Member of Parliament (OttawaÑVanier) Mauril Bélanger, on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage Liza Frulla, today announced $218,925 in funding for the Legacy of Hope Foundation's project called "Where Are the Children? Healing the Legacy of Residential Schools."The project involves digitizing documents and images that focus on the era of residential schoolsÑa dark chapter in the history of Aboriginal communities and our countryÑand putting this material on the Internet. "I would like to commend the Legacy of Hope Foundation on its efforts to help Aboriginal communities that were affected by residential schools," said Mr. Bélanger. "This project will help us understand the legacy of these institutions and the impact they had on the lives of many Aboriginal people.""The Government of Canada is proud to be a partner in projects like this one that use the great potential of the Internet to help Canadians discover important elements of their history, their heritage, and their culture," said Minister Frulla.
