Government of Canada Supports the Renovation of the former Arts Guild Building

CHARLOTTETOWN, October 1st 2004 -- Member of Parliament (Charlottetown) Shawn Murphy, on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage Liza Frulla, today announced $209,246 in funding for Ars Longa. The funds will allow the organization to renovate the former Arts Guild Building and purchase specialized equipment."The Government of Canada is committed to ensuring that Canadians have greater access to the arts, culture, and heritage," said Mr. Murphy. "This initiative will enrich Prince Edward Island's cultural life and will showcase the creative talent that can be found in this province.""The funding announced today will provide the arts community in Prince Edward Island with access to a high-quality, multi-purpose space," added Minister Frulla. "Established and emerging artists will be able to share their experiences and to demonstrate their talent and their passion for the arts."Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through its Cultural Spaces Canada program. This program supports cultural infrastructure projects that increase access for Canadians to performing, visual, and media arts or that improve physical conditions for artistic creativity and innovation. Funding is also provided for the construction or renovation of arts and heritage facilities, for the purchase of specialized equipment, and for feasibility studies and projects to transform buildings into arts or heritage facilities.
