Government of Canada Supports the Salon du livre de Toronto

TORONTO, October 1st, 2004 -- Yasmin Ratansi, Member of Parliament (Don Valley East), on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage Liza Frulla, today announced funding of $27,500 for the 12th edition of the Salon du livre de Toronto and its Writers' Festival. This funding will enable organizers to continue to showcase Canadian writers and their works."I want to congratulate the team at the Salon du livre de Toronto for all that they have accomplished in the past 12 years," said Ms. Ratansi. "From its very first day, the Salon has underscored the vitality of French-language literature in Ontario and has played a vital role in raising awareness of Francophone writers from every part of the country.""I am very pleased to support organizations like the Salon du livre de Toronto, which do so much to foster the pride and vitality of Canada's Francophone communities," added Minister Frulla. "I want to thank the Salon's organizers and the volunteers for the remarkable work that they do to give Francophones and Francophiles in Ontario the opportunity to discover the diversity of works produced by our writers."The Salon du livre de Toronto and its Festival des écrivains take place between September 30 and October 3, 2004. Close to 800 publishers are taking part. The Festival des écrivains welcomes approximately 100 Canadian writers and a number of others from La Francophonie. There are General Public and Youth components. Multi-disciplinary literary evenings, roundtable discussions, panel discussions, book launches, writers' gatherings and workshops for grade school and high school students are all on the program.The Department of Canadian Heritage is providing this funding through the Aid to Industry and Associations component of the Book Publishing Industry Development Program.
