Government of Canada Supports the Society for Arts and Technology

MONTREAL, October 15, 2004 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage Liza Frulla today announced funding of $856,720 for the Society for Arts and Technology. This funding will help the Society to undertake the second phase of its Open Territories project, which will further develop three platforms to be used by artists."The Society for Arts and Technology and its partners are developing technologies that will enable Canadian artists to advance their work and to communicate and collaborate with each other from various locations," said Minister Frulla. "This innovative project puts Canada at the forefront of the use of broadband networks to give our artists the tools for avant-garde cultural expression."The aim of the Open Territories project is to foster the emergence of innovative forms of cultural expression by stimulating the creativity of a new generation of artists. The partners in this project include the University of Montréal, InterAccess, McGill University, CANARIE, and the National Research Council.The funding for this project comes from the New Media Research Networks Fund component of the Canadian Culture Online initiative of the Department of Canadian Heritage.
