October 25, 2004 GATINEAU, QUEBEC -- The Honourable Walt Lastewka, Parliamentary Secretary of Public Works and Government Services Canada (PWGSC), will be available to discuss the Government-wide Review of Procurement with media following a consultation session with stakeholders on his Concept Paper for smart buying. The discussion paper is aimed at developing a simpler and more consolidated procurement system while increasing transparency, accountability and fiscal responsibility. The goal is to improve the business of government and to respect the interests of Canadian taxpayers. Smart buying is key to PWGSC Minister Scott Brison's strategy to make PWGSC the centre of excellence in the provision of cost-effective services. Mr. Lastewka has been consulting with stakeholders on how to best improve federal procurement since completing a comprehensive data gathering and analysis stage, where procurement data from within government, the private sector, academia and other jurisdictions was studied. The public is being invited to consult the Smart Buying discussion paper, and provide input on the future of government procurement before Friday, November 5, 2004.
