PARKS CANADA ADDS TWO NEW WEB FEATURES FOR WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH

OTTAWA, Ontario, October 19, 2004 -- As part of its ongoing efforts to highlight some of the under-represented voices in Canadian history, Parks Canada has added two new features that explain and celebrate the role of women in Canadian history to its website: a women's history page and a series of 3-D tours of historic sites devoted to various aspects of women's history. These features will be launched during Women's History Month in October. "Canadian Women's History - Be Proud of It, Be Part of It" is located under "Spotlights" on the National Historic Sites page of Parks Canada's Web site at www.pc.gc.ca. The page offers quick access to the numerous sources of information on women's history found throughout the Parks Canada Web site, making it easy to learn more about this important aspect of Canadian history. Its sections explain women's historic achievements and celebrate milestones in women's history, such as achieving the vote, gaining access to educational institutions and improving women's legal status in the home, workplace and community. Each year, the Government of Canada designates a number of people, places and events to be of national significance. Women's history is one of three priority areas that Parks Canada is seeking to better represent in this commemorative program. The others are Aboriginal and ethnocultural history. This lively and entertaining new Web page includes a list of all designations that relate directly to women's role in Canadian history. It also provides links to stories about nationally significant women and "This Week in History" stories, as well as to other websites describing women's place in Canadian history. The page encourages visitors to participate in the process of historic commemoration and provides information on how individuals and groups can nominate a person, place or event to be designated. The Women's History Web page and the 3-D tours both help to educate and entertain Canadians about the role women played in the making of our nation.
