October 29, 2004 Tracadie-Sheila, New Brunswick The Hon. Andy Scott, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians; the Hon. Elvy Robichaud, Minister of Health & Wellness; and Mayor Jean-Eudes Savoie today announced that the Town of Tracadie-Sheila will receive funding for municipal water system improvements through the injection of a $2,095,023 investment under the Canada - New Brunswick Infrastructure Program. "Today's announcement will result in a number of benefits for the municipality and its residents such as an increase in the number of households connected to the municipal water system and greater production of potable water," said Scott. "It takes all levels of government working together with key stakeholders to achieve good infrastructure projects that will improve the quality of life of Canadians in urban, rural and remote communities across the country." "The provincial government is pleased to partner with the federal government and the Town of Tracadie-Sheila to improve the municipality's water system," said Minister Robichaud, on behalf of Premier Bernard Lord, Minister Responsible for the Regional Development Corporation, and Environment and Local Government Minister Brenda Fowlie. "This project falls in line with the infrastructure Program's priority which is to invest in green infrastructure such as water and wastewater projects." "The Town of Tracadie-Sheila is very pleased to acknowledge both federal and provincial governments' commitment toward our water system initiative in the town's northern area," said Mayor Savoie. "Besides providing a second section across the river, the new infrastructure will help supply water to the industrial park and, therefore, will contribute to the economic development of our municipality." The project involves the construction of a municipal well and the extension of the municipal water distribution system. The project also involves watermains crossing under the Little Tracadie River. Today's announcement brings the total approved infrastructure projects in New Brunswick to 86. The Canada-New Brunswick Infrastructure Program provides up to two-thirds of the eligible costs of community infrastructure projects. Participating communities provide the remaining one-third of project costs, making the program a unique partnership between all three levels of government with infrastructure investments of more than $163 million in New Brunswick over six years. In New Brunswick, the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency is responsible for the implementation of the Canada-New Brunswick Infrastructure Program federally, while the Department of the Environment and Local Government, in conjunction with the Regional Development Corporation, are the provincial jurisdictions responsible for the implementation of the agreement. Each of the three levels of government will contribute one third of the eligible costs of the projects.
