No. H078/04 For release October 22, 2004 OTTAWA - Transport Minister Jean-C. Lapierre today announced the appointment of Judy A. Steele, CA, of Halifax, Nova Scotia, to the board of directors of the Halifax Port Authority. "Ms. Steele's expertise in finance, communications, business and governance will make her an asset to the board of the Halifax Port Authority," said Mr. Lapierre. "I am pleased that she has agreed to share her skills with the authority because the port has such an important economic impact on the province." Ms. Steele holds a bachelor of public relations from Mount Saint Vincent University and a chartered accountant designation. She currently holds the position of director, investor and external relations, at Emera Inc., in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Ms. Steele started her financial career at Ernst & Young in 1985, and served as a principal of the firm in Halifax before joining Emera in 1999. Ms. Steele is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nova Scotia, and past chair of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. The Halifax Port Authority is the Canada Port Authority (CPA) established under the Canada Marine Act on March 1, 1999 to manage the Port of Halifax. As a CPA, the Halifax Port Authority benefits from greater management flexibility, including increased freedom to develop contracts and borrow money from commercial lenders. The Port of Halifax handled 13.8 million tonnes of cargo in 2003, with nearly 2000 cargo vessels using its facilities. It also serves as a cruise port with a reputation for the safe and efficient handling of some of the world's largest and most luxurious ships at its principal cruise facility, Ocean Terminals.
