WATERFRONT MALL IMPROVEMENTS TO HELP DOWNTOWN SUMMERSIDE

October 15, 2004 Summerside, Prince Edward Island Details of a major renovation project for the Waterfront Shopping Centre that will further advance the revitalization of downtown Summerside were announced today. The project, to begin immediately, will see the development of 15,000 square feet in the shopping centre with a goal of attracting new information technology and professional services sectors into the renovated space. The Summerside Regional Development Corporation will receive funding from the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) to carry out the work which will involve the construction of walls, electrical distribution, plumbing and exterior facade improvements. "The project we are announcing here today is a major step forward in the ongoing effort to make the downtown vibrant again," said the Hon. Joe McGuire, Minister of ACOA and MP for Egmont. "The Summerside Regional Development Corporation intends to convert 15,000 square feet of Waterfront Place to commercial use, and I believe in doing so the SRDC is demonstrating tremendous vision. They are leading the way in what could become a shift of focus for the downtown by removing some of the emphasis from retail development and bringing economic expansion and job creation to the fore." In response to an economic downturn in the downtown area, caused in part by the migration of retail development to the north end of Summerside, the need to revitalize the downtown is a priority for a number of partners in the area including the Summerside Regional Development Corporation (SRDC), the non-profit group which owns the Waterfront Mall Shopping Centre. The goal of the project is to increase traffic in and through the downtown and to increase the number of people working in the area. Initial projections indicate the new commercial space will eventually house up to 50 employees.
