QUEBEC CITY, November 15, 2004 -- While in Quebec City, the Honourable Andy Scott, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians, announced today that his department allocated over $6 million in fiscal year 2003-2004 to promote economic development in Aboriginal communities in Quebec. Funding was provided for 68 economic development projects run by Aboriginal entrepreneurs, organizations or communities in Quebec. "Economic development is one of the fundamental principles enabling Aboriginal communities to become increasingly self-reliant and fully participate in Canada's economy," said Minister Scott. "Moreover, the economic benefits of these projects extend not only to Aboriginal people, but to all Canadians." Funding was awarded under six economic development programs managed by Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC). Funding was provided for projects such as launching new businesses or expanding existing ones, negotiating access to resources and building infrastructures in various economic sectors. As well, it is estimated that these projects have led to the creation of nearly 300 jobs in various Aboriginal communities. All economic development projects submitted to INAC are assessed on the basis of various criteria, including direct benefits for Aboriginal people, profitability, job creation, future economic benefits, environmental friendliness and long-term viability. INAC's role in the realm of economic development is to facilitate partnerships, overcome obstacles and provide new outlets to enable First Nations and Inuit to increasingly participate in local and national economic growth.
