Minister Dion Welcomes Russia's Ratification of the Kyoto Protocol

OTTAWA, November 5, 2004 - The Hon. Stéphane Dion, Minister of the Environment, issued the following statement after Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law to complete Russian ratification of the Kyoto Protocol: The completion of the process of The Russian Federation’s ratification of the Kyoto Protocol by President Putin today is a very welcome development and a most important step forward, not only for the Kyoto Protocol, but for the environment we all share. Climate change is the most critical environmental issue facing the world today, and global cooperation is essential if we are to address this challenge in a meaningful way. The Kyoto Protocol provides a foundation for this cooperation. Canada and Russia have much in common as northern countries. Both countries are particularly touched by climate change and share a commitment for cooperation to mitigate the impacts of climate change and to protect the ecosystem of the North.
