STATEMENT BY MINISTER CARROLL ON THE APPARENT DEATH OF MARGARET HASSEN

November 24, 2004 Ottawa -- The following statement was issued by the Honourable Aileen Carroll, Minister of International Cooperation, following a memorial service for Margaret Hassan, held today in Ottawa: "On behalf of the Canadian International Development Agency, I wish to express my deep sorrow and my indignation following the apparent death of Margaret Hassan. I also express my deepest sympathies to her family and colleagues, and to her many friends in Iraq and around the world. As the head of CARE's operations in Iraq, Margaret Hassan served the people of that country with dedication and courage. The work of Margaret Hassan is a fine example of the deep motivation and commitment of thousands of humanitarian and development workers around the world who knowingly put themselves in positions of danger to help improve the lives of others.
