No Q013/04 For release November 3, 2004 MONTREAL, Quebec - Transport Canada is holding today the 5th edition of Inspector for a day, an event to help students prepare for a career in transportation safety and security. This Transport Canada initiative enables many students to spend an exciting day with 15 experienced inspectors from the world of transportation. Developed for Secondary IV and V students as well as college students, Inspector for a day allows them to get acquainted with various aspects of safety and security and the enforcement of regulations relating to all modes of transportation. Paired with inspectors, students have the opportunity to go on an inspection to an aircraft manufacturer and learn about the operations of an air carrier and a pilot school. Some get a first-hand look at the activities in a railway signal control room, and others participate in a ship inspection or inspections pertaining to the transportation of dangerous goods. One group joins Security and Emergency Preparedness inspectors at an airport passenger screening area, while another discovers the electrical engineering facilities of an airport.Inspector for a day is based on a solid partnership with the education sector. Participants enrol in the activity through a school board or college resource person, according to their field of study and their interest in a career in the world of transportation. The primary objectives of this activity are to demystify the role of an inspector, explain Transport Canada's mandate for maintaining a high level of safety and security, and spark students' interest in a career in the federal Public Service. Inspector for a day also helps illustrate the values of Transport Canada, i.e. respect, professionalism, teamwork and client service. Since the very first Inspector for a day, comments from students and inspectors alike have testified to the success of this learning experience. Our inspectors take great pride in giving potential recruits a glimpse into their daily lives, and the students are always enthusiastic about the prospect of working in such a fascinating field.
