ASU LONDON TO BE CONSOLIDATED AT WOLSELEY BARRACKS

December 23, 2004 LONDON (ONT) -- Bird Construction Ltd. of Toronto, has been awarded a $14.3 million contract to construct a new technical support complex, demolish one building and upgrade site works at Wolseley Barracks in order to consolidate the operations of Area Support Unit (ASU) London. The contract was awarded following a competitive bidding process. This project will relocate the units currently housed at the Highbury Complex to Wolseley Barracks. The buildings of the Highbury Complex - six in all - are largely beyond economic renovation and repair. This infrastructure will be replaced by the construction of a new 7,500 square-metre facility. The consolidation will improve its operation by significantly reducing the land and building area occupied by ASU London. "This project is part of an ongoing Canadian Forces strategy of re-allocating resources in a more efficient and cost-effective way," said Defence Minister Bill Graham. "The consolidation represents an opportunity for significant savings in yearly operating and maintenance costs and contributes to the economic growth and urban renewal in the area." "By consolidating ASU London at Wolseley Barracks, there will be a significant improvement to the working conditions for our personnel," said General Ray Henault, Chief of the Defence Staff. "In turn, they will be better able to support the 2,800 reservists, 5,000 cadets and 300 cadet instructors located throughout south-western Ontario, strengthening the whole organization." Construction is expected to be completed by March 2006.
