Alcohol and illicit drug dependence, 2002 In 2002, an estimated 641,000 people, or about 2.6% of the population aged 15 or older, reported symptoms indicating that they were dependent on alcohol. In addition, 194,000 people, or just under 1% of the population had symptoms suggesting dependence on illicit drugs.
