Governor General announces the Peace Officer Exemplary Service Medal

December 15, 2004 OTTAWA –– Her Excellency the Right Honourable Adrienne Clarkson, Governor General of Canada, is pleased to announce today that Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II has approved the creation of the Peace Officer Exemplary Service Medal. "I am delighted that the Peace Officer Exemplary Service Medal will be awarded to individuals who contribute to the public good," said the Governor General. "Together with all Canadians, I offer my deep gratitude for their commitment, dedication and caring, for the building of links between the members of their professions and the communities they serve." The Peace Officer Exemplary Service Medal was created to recognize peace officers employed at least 20 years in protecting the safety and security of the public in Canada and who have performed their duties in an exemplary manner. The Peace Officer Exemplary Service Medal is the sixth medal in the family of Exemplary Service Medals. The honour may be awarded posthumously. Peace officers are employed by a recognized organization including, but not limited to, the Canada Border Services Agency as well as Parks Canada; the departments of Citizenship and Immigration, Environment, and Fisheries and Oceans Canada. Only the Sovereign of Canada has the authority to create a new official honour, which she does on the advice of the Government of Canada. Honours policy advice is provided to the Prime Minister by the Honours Policy Committee, a group of senior public servants, chaired by a senior member of the Privy Council Office. Once an honour is created, it is the responsibility of the Governor General to administer the program, through the Chancellery of Honours. The inaugural presentation ceremony will take place at Rideau Hall at a later date.
