Fredericton, NB — A number of improvement projects will proceed in the near future at the Fredericton Airport. This announcement was made by the Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development, and MP for Fredericton, Andy Scott, on behalf of Transport Minister Jean-C. Lapierre, together with Lyle Smith, Chairman of the Greater Fredericton Airport Authority. The Government of Canada will contribute $1 million towards these projects under the terms of the Fredericton Airport Transfer Agreement.
"Fredericton Airport is a world class facility that has an essential role to play in building a strong economy for the 21st century in central New Brunswick," said Mr. Scott. "By providing a vital transportation link, Fredericton Airport allows this vibrant community to compete for investment, to build globally competitive firms and to create high quality jobs."
The improvements consist in the expansion of the pre-board security hold area of the Air Terminal Building to accommodate a greater number of passengers, as well as to provide these passengers with washroom and drinking water facilities; and the installation of a sprinkler system for the Air Terminal Building to ensure it is safe and protected in the event of a fire.
"These improvements are part of the Greater Fredericton Airport Authority's ongoing objective to continually advance the services available to our passengers," said Mr. David Innes, President and CEO of the Greater Fredericton Airport Authority. "As the Fredericton Airport continues to grow, it will continue working with the community to be an economic catalyst by providing more and better air connections to the right destinations."
"Transportation is the lifeblood of the economy," said Mr. Lapierre. "The Government of Canada is pleased that it can contribute in making Fredericton Airport a more effective and efficient transportation link that will better serve the economic interests of the community."
In May 2001, the Greater Fredericton Airport Authority and Transport Canada signed the Fredericton Airport Transfer Agreement, which transferred operational, managerial and developmental control of Fredericton Airport to the locally based Authority. As part of the agreement, the Government of Canada provided funding for improvement projects at the airport that would be identified by the Greater Fredericton Airport Authority based on their priorities for future airport needs.
