OTTAWA, November 10, 2004 -- Irwin Cotler, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following appointments: André Prévost of Montréal is appointed a judge of the Superior Court of Québec. He replaces Mr. Justice Rodolphe Bilodeau who has elected to become a supernumerary judge. Mr. Justice Prévost graduated in law from the University of Montréal in 1973, and was called to the Barreau du Québec in 1975. At the time of his appointment, he was a partner with the firm of McCarthy Tétrault in Montréal, where he practised primarily in the areas of environmental law, commercial litigation, professional liability and disciplinary law. He has also been National Co-Leader of the litigation section in his firm as well as Director of the Quebec Region. Mr. Justice Prévost has been an active member of the Barreau du Québec, sitting on many of its committees. He is a past Chair of the Environmental Section of the Canadian Bar Association - Quebec Region. He has taught at the Quebec bar admission course, is a frequent lecturer and the author of several legal articles. J. Brian Riordan of Montréal is appointed a judge of the Superior Court of Québec. He replaces Mr. Justice François Rolland who was appointed Chief Justice. Mr. Justice Riordan graduated in law from McGill University in 1978. As well, he holds a Masters degree in Economics, also from McGill University. He was called to the Barreau du Québec in 1979. At the time of his appointment, he was a partner with the law firm of Pouliot Mercure in Montréal, where he practised primarily in the areas of commercial litigation, contract negotiation, labour law and trademark law. Previously, he was also a partner with the firm of Ahern, Lalonde, Nuss and Drymer. Mr. Justice Riordan is a frequent lecturer and the author of several legal publications. He also taught at the Barreau du Québec at the time of the introduction of new Civil Code.
