FEDERAL FUNDING TO ASSIST PAUL FIRST NATION EXPAND INVOLVEMENT IN POWER GENERATION IN ALBERTA

CALGARY, ALBERTA (January 12, 2005) - The Honourable Andy Scott, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians today announced $140,000 in federal funding for the Paul First Nation. This is to develop an agreement with TransAlta Utilities Ltd. for a greater role in the expansion and operations of power generation facilities located near the Paul First Nation. "It is important that our department assist First Nations in securing a voice at the table when it comes to the distribution and use of our natural resources," said Minister Scott. "Partnerships equate to prosperity and closing the economic gap between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people." The agreement with TransAlta will ensure that the Paul First Nation benefits from the expansion of the power generation facilities in the area. "This funding will greatly assist the economic stability of our community and will create new employment over a definite period of time," said Paul First Nation Chief Daniel Paul. This agreement will help to create 150 full time and 50 part-time jobs during the construction and expansion phase of the power generation plants and maintain 10 full-time jobs after construction.
